Professor Fruzsina Gárdos-Orosz, a member of the research team, has been appointed State Secretary of the Hungarian Ministry of Justice

Professor Fruzsina Gárdos-Orosz, member of the “Rule of Law Crisis in the EU” research team, has been appointed State Secretary for Public Administration at the Hungarian Ministry of Justice. The appointment was formalized through Resolution of the President of the Republic No. 98/2026 of May 18, published in the Magyar Közlöny (Hungary’s Official Gazette), effective from May 19, 2026, and signed by President Tamás Sulyok on the proposal of Prime Minister Péter Magyar.

Those who have followed the account of doctoral candidate Zitan Peng Hao’s research stay in Budapest will remember Professor Gárdos-Orosz as his academic supervisor and director of the Institute for Legal Studies at the Centre for Social Sciences.

The appointment comes one month and seven days after Hungary’s general elections, placing Professor Gárdos-Orosz in a position of direct responsibility within the Hungarian Administration of Justice. Just a few weeks after taking office, Professor Gárdos-Orosz represented Hungary, in her capacity as State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, at the General Affairs Council held on May 26, 2026 in Brussels. This was her first appearance in an EU setting since taking up her new post.

This appointment invites reflection on the importance of knowledge transfer between academia and national politics. On March 5 of 2026, Professor Fruzsina Gárdos-Orosz received her diploma certifying the award of the title of Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and three months later she was appointed State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice. This transition combines Professor Gárdos-Orosz’s solid research career in Hungarian and European constitutional and institutional law with her new responsibility of direct public administration, allowing the knowledge generated within the university to translate into concrete decisions and regulatory reforms.

On behalf of the research team led by Professor Susana Sanz Caballero, we would like to congratulate Professor Fruzsina Gárdos-Orosz on this appointment, which recognizes her academic and institutional career and will undoubtedly also enrich our group’s perspective on the mechanisms for safeguarding the rule of law in the European Union.
