Europe has gone through many periods of crisis throughout its history. It has even emerged stronger from many of them thanks to improvements in the design of common institutions or to the extension of competences progressively ceded to the Union. Therefore, the current crisis that the EU is going through should not worry us. However, the current crisis is worrying because it is different from previous crises in that it is a crisis of values. What is being called into question is the necessity and validity of the fundamental principles on which the EU is based and which constitute its ethical substratum, such as the separation of powers, judicial independence, free elections, freedom of expression and of the press, freedom of action for NGOs and political pluralism. The rise of populism and nationalism, including that manifested in Brexit, is leading to an unprecedented situation of bankruptcy of the essential values of the European project. In this book, more than a dozen experts analyze some of the main triggers of this crisis of values, indicate the cost of an eventual failure of the European construction project and provide recipes for overcoming this serious impasse.
