How does radical right‑wing populism behave in the European Parliament? How do these parties vote, what initiatives do they promote, and in which activities do they engage within the chamber? In what ways do they defend their interests, and what kind of response do they receive from the other parliamentary groups? Do they act in a uniform and coordinated manner, regardless of their country of origin, or do they instead follow national priorities and directives? Does their behaviour change when the party they belong to is part of the government in their home Member State?
These and other highly topical questions of undeniable scientific relevance form the core of the doctoral dissertation by Gabriela Alexandra Dumitrascu Paraschiv, entitled “Legislative Dynamics of Radical Right‑Wing Populism in the European Parliament: The Case of the Identity and Democracy Group (2019–2022).” The thesis was supervised by Professors Belén Becerril Atienza and Ainhoa Uribe Otálora at the University San Pablo CEU, the latter being a member of the research teams of projects PID2021‑126765NB‑I00 and CIAICO/2024/191.
The dissertation was successfully defended on 26 January 2026 at the University San Pablo CEU. The examination committee was composed of Dr. Guillermo Ángel Pérez Sánchez, Full Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Valladolid; Dr. Ignacio Blanco Alfonso, Full Professor of Journalism at the University San Pablo CEU; Dr. Beatriz Pérez de las Heras, Full Professor of European Union Law at the University of Deusto; Dr. Manuel Sánchez de Diego Fernández de la Riva, Associate Professor of Constitutional Law at the Complutense University of Madrid; and Dr. Susana Sanz‑Caballero, Full Professor of Public International Law at the University Cardenal Herrera CEU, member of both research projects and their principal investigator.
