International Spring Festival

Spring Festival, also called Chinese New Year, means the beginning of the Spring, and has more than 4,000 years of history. It is the biggest and the most important annual event for Chinese people, and it’s not only celebrated in mainland China, but also in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, Korea, Singapore and some other Asian countries.

Year of the dog

2018 Chinese New Year falls on 16th Feb. It is the Year of the Dog according to the Chinese zodiac, which is a circle of 12 animals based on the year, they are mouse, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, pig.

When is the Spring Festival?

Chinese New Year dates vary slightly between years, but it usually comes during the period from January 21st to February 20th in Gregorian calendar. The dates change every year because the festival is based on the Chinese Lunar Calendar, The lunar calendar is associated with the movement of the moon.

How do people celebrate the Spring Festival?

The reunion dinner on Chinese New Year’s Eve is a big feast to commemorate the past year. After the reunion dinner, families sit together to watch the Spring Festival Gala Which collects various well-selected performances while chatting, then comes the annual largest usage of fireworks on the planet, the celebration lasts 15 days until Lantern Festival, Houses are decorated with red couplets, red lanterns, and red paper cuttings; city streets are lit up by red lanterns; and numerous people are dressed in red.

At CEU UCH, we are going to celebrate the spring Festival in the HUB101 next Wednesday 14th Feb. There will be many traditional activities from 15:00. Here you have a schedule for the celebration:

–   Writing Spring Festival couplets on red paper and hanging them around the HUB, decorating the HUB with traditional stuffs.

–   Paper cutting and making Chinese knots.

–   Karaoke and musical performances from our students.

–   Making typical Chinese food dumplings.

–   Playing Chinese games.

–   Giving wishes and receiving a red envelope.
