Framing the world – that’s what twenty or so students from different countries and degrees are doing at CEU Photo, which is just one of the channels for creative expression that CEU offers its students.

CEU Photo provides “a different perspective on contemporary photography and its aesthetics. We want to be a place where members can think deeply about want an image should be, and also where they can develop their own projects”, in the words of Manolo Millán, the group coordinator. “We work together as a group, as equals, and our students’ own proposals are what we talk about and what we work on.”

‘I JOINED CEU PHOTO TO MEET NEW PEOPLE, TALK ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHERS, CREATE JOINT PROJECTS… AND IT HAS MET MY EXPECTATIONS FROM THE VERY FIRST DAY’

This way in which CEU Photo is organized is part of the secret of its success.

Eva González, a third-year Audiovisual Communication student joined CEU Photo because “it seemed like a good way to get away from the stress you get from lectures sometimes. Another reason is that I knew the lecturer and also photography plays a big role in my life.”

“I joined to meet new people, talk about photographers, create joint projects… and it has met my expectations from the very first day. In fact, it has exceeded them. You’re always learning new things and enjoying yourself, and it’s even better when it’s something you love doing anyway.”

‘THERE’S A GREAT AMOSPHERE IN THE GROUP AND I FEEL REALLY AT HOME THERE. THERE’S NO DISCRIMINATION BETWEEN THOSE WITH MORE OR LESS EXPERTISE’

Eva says that the atmosphere at CEU Photo is “really friendly and welcoming. Everyone gets on well with each other and that’s a big part of it being such an enriching experience. Being able to take part in projects together is both great fun and really revealing, as we all come together to think about a particular issue and it’s really interesting how each person approaches it in a different way. That’s one of the great things about it.”

Luna Rotelle, a second-year Audiovisual Communication undergraduate from Argentina, is also very satisfied with the CEU Photo experience: “it gives me the chance to learn, enjoy myself and really feel part of university life in a very natural way. Almost every time I go, I learn something new and I come away with real enthusiasm to use what I’ve learned in future projects. The best thing is that you learn from the contributions that everyone makes and not just from what the lecturer says.”

“There’s a great atmosphere and I feel really at home there. There’s no discrimination between those with more or less expertise. In fact, it’s the opposite: everyone is willing to share what they know with others.”

So, how much you know or where you are from doesn’t matter at CEU Photo, just as it hasn’t mattered for Luna and Eva.
For Luna, photography is just a hobby for now and she doesn’t know where it will take her.
For Eva, who inherited her love of photography from her father, it’s already a way of life. She’s been doing photoshoots, bookings, and events, for four years now and she says “they have been the happiest years of my life. It’s true what they say that if you have a job that you like and you won’t ever have to “work” a single day.”

Whatever the future may hold, both of them think that CEU Photo is helping them to grow both personally and creatively. And they’ll keep on working on their personal projects and that of the whole CEU Photo group, which will be displayed in group exhibitions and might even be published.
