Why European students choose CEU to study Veterinary Medicine

When your fellow students on campus are from more than 70 countries, you start to look at things in a different way. What starts out as snatched conversations between lectures become fascinating voyages of discovery into far-off lands, different cultures and different perspectives on the world – and the beginning of international bonds of companionship and friendship. New horizons begin to open up.

39% of students at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine are from abroad. It’s the only veterinary faculty in Spain which offers the degree in three languages – Spanish, English, and French -. Our aim is to facilitate the integration of all our students into this ever more international campus.

“ONE NIGHT, I WAS GOING BACK HOME WHEN MY DAD CALLED ME TO SAY THAT HE’D READ ON THE INTERNET THAT THERE WAS A UNIVERSITY IN SPAIN THAT HAD LECTURES IN FRENCH. I SEARCHED FOR IT AND, WHEN I SAW THAT WITH THE DEGREE I COULD WORK ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, I JUST KNEW. I WANTED TO STUDY AT CEU.”

Lucille Remignard (France). Veterinary student at CEU.

“YOU MEET STUDENTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. BEING HERE WITH SUCH A VARIETY OF PEOPLE FROM SO MANY DIFFERENT PLACES IS REALLY ENRICHING.”

Pablo Gómez de Mayora García (Belgium). Veterinary student at CEU.

The campus is hosting an increasing number of conferences and international events, enabling students to meet experts from across the world and gain real insights into the veterinary profession at an international level.

In 2018, the Faculty hosted the Summer School of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP), an international event that ensured that the Faculty was at the center of international attention for the profession, as it welcomed a hundred veterinary residents from Europe and the United States.

In 2018, CEU also hosted the ISDVMA (International Sled Dog Veterinary Medical Association) annual conference, which saw specialists in the care of these dogs come to Valencia from all over the world.

As well as welcoming international events and experts, the Faculty is also able to offer students placements with veterinary clinics and specialists across the world, with more than 1200 agreements in place.

Our determination to ensuring that our graduates are fully formed international veterinarians also manifests itself in our volunteering projects. These are also the fruit of the University’s commitment to providing a real service to society – this is part of the CEU identity. Such projects have seen CEU students involved in improving livestock health and production in Kenya, Malawi, and Lebanon.

Approachable lecturers providing accredited training

CEU’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is the first private faculty to be awarded accreditation by the EAEVE (European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education), which assesses veterinary faculties across Europe. This means that the CEU Veterinary Medicine degree meets the strictest quality standards set by the EU’s Education Committee.

With an innovative curriculum, which focuses on preparing students for professional practice, courses are grouped together by species, so that all the particular pathologies can be studied together. In this way, students can better understand some of the approaches employed in professional practice and can more easily acquire the competences and skills that they will need from their very first day as a fully qualified veterinarian.

The Faculty’s staff includes European and American diplomates, the highest possible qualification for veterinary specialization, recognized across the world. We have diplomates in the following areas: Equine Internal Medicine, Veterinary Internal Medicine, Veterinary Surgery, Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, Pathological Anatomy and Veterinary Poultry Science.

“IT’S GREAT HOW APPROACHABLE THE LECTURERS ARE. IF YOU SHOW REAL INTEREST AND INITIATIVE, A LOT OF DOORS OPEN FOR YOU. THAT APPROACHABILITY IS SOMETHING THAT MAKES STUDYING HERE SO MUCH BETTER. IT TAKES IT TO ANOTHER LEVEL.”

Pablo Gómez de Mayora García (Belgium). Veterinary student at CEU.

Surveys of our students have shown that they are very happy with the quality of teaching provided. In the last round of surveys, the lecturers at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine achieved an average rating of 3.24 out of 4.

“THE LECTURERS ARE ALWAYS WILLING TO LISTEN TO OUR QUESTIONS AND HELP WITH OUR NEEDS. WE DO A LOT OF PRACTICAL TRAINING AND I THINK THAT’S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR OUR FUTURE.”

Lucille Remignard (France). Veterinary student at CEU

An educational experience based on innovation and professional insight

With its own hospital, the Hospital Clínico Veterinario, and a teaching and research farm, CEU can offer students excellent facilities to hone their practical skills across a range of specializations.

The Hospital Clínico Veterinario is a top-quality resource for teaching and the location for a significant part of students’ practical training. Built very recently and 4500 m2 in size, it has a range of consulting rooms and operating theatres for the provision of care to both large and small animals.

The Faculty also has its own teaching and research farm, which is 38,784 m2 in size, with six animal units (horses, poultry, rabbits, cows, sheep, and dogs). It is at this farm where students will practice their skills in handling, general care, and reproduction, both with production animals and horses. They will also start learning how to handle and examine small animals. One of the aims of the use of this facility is to ensure that students receive a wide range of practical training, both with production animals and with horses.

“WHAT I LIKE BEST ABOUT CEU IS THE PRACTICAL TRAINING. THAT’S WHY I THINK ALMOST ALL THE STUDENTS AGREE THAT, BY THE TIME WE GO OUT TO DO VOLUNTARY PLACEMENTS, WE FEEL READY BECAUSE OF EVERYTHING THAT WE’VE LEARNT AT THE HOSPITAL AND THE CEU FARM AND THE EXTERNAL PARTNER FARMS. YOU CAN’T GO WRONG IF YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY AT CEU.”

Lucille Remignard (France). Veterinary student at CEU
