Estar: When to Be Is Not to Be\n\" class=\"wp-image-9016\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at some of the examples that you can hear in the recording and some other useful things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For these kinds of things you should use <em>ser:&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts, nationalities, jobs, physical characteristics, personality &#8211; <em>SER<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>Esto es muy \u00fatil&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/em>&#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This is very useful<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>Soy ingl\u00e9s<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I&#8217;m English<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>\u00bfEs mi profesora de espa\u00f1ol?<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Is she&nbsp;my Spanish teacher?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>Somos muy fuertes<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We&#8217;re very strong<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>Son muy inteligentes<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;They&#8217;re very intelligent<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>Ser o no ser: esa es la cuesti\u00f3n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; To be or not to be, that is the question<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/44oU6C3TOdQ?start=95&#038;feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/blog.uchceu.es\/servicio-idiomas\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Location of physical things &#8211; <em>ESTAR<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally, when you&#8217;re talking about where something is, <em>estar<\/em> is the verb you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Laura no est\u00e1&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/em>&#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Laura&#8217;s not here<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>El supermercado est\u00e1 enfrente de este edificio<\/em> &#8211;&nbsp; The supermarket is opposite this building<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>\u00bfD\u00f3nde est\u00e1 mi profesor de espa\u00f1ol?<\/em>&nbsp; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Present continuous &#8211; <em>ESTAR<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Estoy escuchando&nbsp;<\/em> &#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019m listening<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00bfQu\u00e9 est\u00e1s viendo?&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp; &#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp; What are you watching?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To form the present continuous in Spanish, you always use <em>estar<\/em>, never <em>ser<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Feelings &amp; things that are true now, but might not be in the future &#8211; <em>ESTAR<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Est\u00e1 enferma&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em> &#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp; She&#8217;s ill<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Estoy de acuerdo contigo&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em> &#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp; I agree with you<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00bfEst\u00e1s enfadado?&nbsp;<\/em> &#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Are you angry?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Careful: some adjectives change meaning when combined with <em>ser<\/em> or <em>estar<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00a1Qu\u00e9 guapo eres!&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em> &#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You&#8217;re so handsome!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u00a1Qu\u00e9 guapo est\u00e1s! <\/em>&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; You look really smart!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Es lista&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>&#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; She&#8217;s clever<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Est\u00e1 lista&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; She&#8217;s ready<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This should give you a good idea to start with, although sometimes the difference can be quite subtle. After twenty years of trying, I&#8217;m still trying to work out what Enrique Bunbury means when he says that he &#8220;est\u00e1 entre dos tierras&#8221;.
