Happy New Year! On 19<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span>\u00a0February took place the International Spring Festival. Students and teachers alike came to CEU Valencia\u2019s Hub<\/a> to celebrate the year of the pig and discover Chinese culture. Among workshops, Chinese food and discussions about cultural differences, the event was the occasion to see how international the university is.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"Learning about Chinese culture<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Our International Spring Festival<\/strong> started with CEU\u2019s Chinese teacher telling us about the traditional way of celebrating New Year\u2019s Eve in China. We learned about food, customs<\/strong>, and students got to share their own Christmas and New Years\u2019 stories<\/strong> while traditional Chinese music was playing in the background.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One fun fact\u00a0particularly struck us.\u00a0In China, you can rent a boyfriend or a girlfriend for New Year dinner. It is because if you are single for too many years, your family starts worrying. Bringing a guest with you does the trick!<\/p>\n

Embracing different cultures is what it means\u00a0to be an international university<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Then, the\u00a0Chinese professor\u00a0brought ink, brushes and red paper<\/strong> and started translating names into Chinese characters<\/strong>. Some students and teachers tried as well to take up the brush, ink it and write.\u00a0Finally, wishes for this new year were hung<\/strong> on a flower composition in the Hub.<\/p>\n

The benefits of studying at an international university<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This New Year celebration was also the occasion to meet with international students. Peng Tzu Huang, \u201cChienny\u201d is a Taiwanese\u00a0dentistry student<\/strong> here at CEU Valencia. When she asks me where I\u2019m from and answers France, she starts speaking French!\u00a0As she sees I am amazed, she explains:\u00a0\u201cI was studying in Canada before,\u00a0so I took French lessons there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Peng Tzu Huang takes free Spanish courses<\/strong><\/a> here at CEU Valencia. She is A1 level for now but yearns to be fluent. Her goal is to be B2 level when she\u2019s a third-year student.\u00a0\u201cIn Canada, there were many Chinese people\u201d she explains. \u201cI came here because it was a more international university<\/strong>\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And indeed, as I talk with her friends, they all are confident that Valencia is a great place to learn Spanish<\/strong><\/a>, mostly because the locals don\u2019t speak that much English.\u00a0\u201cWe went to Madrid and Barcelona, and when we asked our way, a woman answered in perfect English!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bringing back the\u00a0fun\u00a0in learning languages<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As we are in awe in front of the inked characters, a large group enters the room. Noel, an English teacher, chose to leave the classroom to bring his students at the Hub<\/strong>. He gave them a mission: find one interesting thing about China. But really, that was an excuse he made for other purposes.<\/p>\n

To\u00a0him,\u00a0having events where his students can see the advantages of speaking English is considered a great asset.\u00a0\u201cLanguages can be boring to learn\u201d\u00a0he states. “Here, there are Taiwanese and Chinese people. My students will have<\/em> to speak English!<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the end, his students took interest in the session and, as predicted, spoke English. Objective attained, Noel! As they were reluctant on leaving, he laughed and said: \u201cYou didn\u2019t want to come, and now you don\u2019t want to go!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was time to leave the Hub, redecorated in red. There were not only Chinese characters on the sheets but also drawings: pigs, lotus, and other flowers. We had all learned much here about Chinese culture, language, and writing<\/strong> in this afternoon. But somehow we also learned about Spanish and English.
