Professor Susana Sanz Caballero<\/a>\u2019s Fulbright Schuman postdoctoral fellowship continues to progress at the College of Staten Island, part of the City University of New York (CUNY), in New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the extracurricular activities she participated in during April and May, one of the highlights was the organization of the conference \u201cNew Trends for Accountability for International Crimes,\u201d<\/strong> held on the Staten Island campus and delivered by Dr. Ana Peyr\u00f3 Llopis<\/strong>, Principal Legal Officer at the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs. Dr. Peyr\u00f3 has also served as the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General<\/strong> for the prosecution of crimes committed by the Islamic State\/DAESH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formally invited by Professor Jane Marcus-Delgado, Dr. Peyr\u00f3 shared with faculty and students at the College of Staten Island her firsthand experience in Iraq as the Secretary-General\u2019s representative, investigating international crimes and gathering evidence related to mass killings committed in the region following the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a conclusion to her academic activity for the semester, Professor Sanz Caballero also delivered a lecture titled\u00a0\u201cExploring the U.S. and Spanish Legal Frameworks for Human Rights Protection\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0at\u00a0Stevens Institute of Technology<\/strong>, a private STEM-focused university in New Jersey. In her talk, she compared the legal approaches of the U.S. and Spain, highlighting their differing perspectives on social rights and the provision of public services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, she joined Professor Marcus-Delgado\u2019s class \u201cPeople of New York\u201d for a visit to the\u00a0Ellis Island Immigration Museum<\/strong>, as part of an activity aimed at exploring the history of New York City\u2014 a city shaped by the integration and efforts of immigrants from around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among Professor Sanz\u2019s most noteworthy activities in May was her participation in the workshop\u00a0\u201cThe European Challenge,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0organized by\u00a0CEU Fernando III University<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Las Casas Institute for Social Justice<\/strong>\u00a0at the University of Oxford. The event, directed by Professor Carlos Espali\u00fa, featured Professor Sanz presenting her\u00a0work in progress<\/strong>\u00a0titled\u00a0\u201cThe Fragility of Human Rights in Times of Rule of Law Erosion: Europe and America.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0In her presentation, she emphasized the inseparable link between the rule of law and human rights, arguing that one cannot exist without the other. The workshop will conclude with a final session in November and will result in the publication of the presentations in a special issue of an international academic journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
