Less than twenty-five years ago, the debate about the crisis of the Rule of Law was unimaginable in the European Union. It was universally accepted that the Union only admitted democratic States that respected human rights and upheld the ideals of freedom. It was also taken for granted that once inside the organization, member states could only refine and improve their adherence to the principles on which the Rule of Law is based, such as legality, the separation of powers, accountability, judicial independence, and press freedom, among others. However, the trends of recent years demonstrate that progress can be reversed. In this regard, sporadic but deeply concerning attacks on the values on which the Union is founded, including the Rule of Law, have been observed in some Member States, while others are outright drifting toward autocracy. Consequently, nearly twenty European researchers have come together to present their diagnosis and prognosis on this ailment afflicting the Union in the form of a Rule of Law crisis, particularly in the aftermath of COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
