Which antibiotics do dentist prescribe around the globe?<\/h1>\n

In order to observe <\/span><\/span>as well as acquire the attitudes and habits of antibiotics<\/a> usage in dentistry nowadays, we interview <\/span><\/span>four dentists<\/span><\/span> from <\/span><\/span>different countries<\/span><\/span> and cultures.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From left to right, Dr Aprim (Sweden), Dr Tarazona (Spain), Dr Chong (Malaysia) and Dr Chung (Taiwan).<\/h4>\n

We\u00a0start our\u00a0interview by asking: Which antibiotics do you usually use, and why?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Dr CHUNG:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Amoxicillin<\/span><\/b>. It has great e<\/span>ff<\/span>ect and less side e<\/span>ff<\/span>ect as well as resistance.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr CHONG:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Amoxicillin<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>Amoxicillin plus clavulanic Acid<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and <\/span>Erythromycin<\/span><\/b>. They can be used on many cases and have good e<\/span>ff<\/span>ects.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr\u00a0<\/i><\/b>APRIM :<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

“Phenoxymethylpenicillin<\/span><\/b>.<\/span> It is the one that works for <\/span>the most<\/span> of the times and is the one that has become the most ordinary, the guidelines says that this compound<\/span>\u00a0is the first hand choice when it comes to antibiotics.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr TARAZONA:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

“Amoxicillin<\/span><\/span> an<\/span><\/span>d <\/span><\/span>Clavulanic acid<\/span><\/span>. They are for anaerobic bacteria in the mouth. Clavulanic acid is for gram negative bacteria.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span> Bacteria in the mouth is best treatable with amoxicillin.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Our second question: What precaution do you have to consider when you use antibiotics?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Dr CHUNG: \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

“Only when <\/span>pus<\/span><\/b> formation or acute <\/span>inflammation<\/span><\/b> occurred, I use them. If the patient su<\/span>ff<\/span>ers from chronic inflammation or non-severe case, I will clean the wound and rely on the immune system of patients”<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr CHONG: \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

“Be <\/span>careful for<\/span> patients with <\/span>allergy<\/span><\/b>, and the <\/span>heal<\/span><\/b>th condition<\/span><\/b> of patient, such as renal disease and metabolism disease. Most important, make sure that patient will take the antibiotic with the <\/span>indication<\/span><\/b>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr APRIM :<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cPatients that develops <\/span>resistance<\/span><\/b> if given under wrong circumstances. When we deal <\/span>with patients with <\/span>allergies<\/span><\/b>, we change <\/span>k\u00e5vepenin<\/span> to clindamycin. You only give antibiotics if patient fulfills the criteria’s and there is 3 of them.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr TARAZONA:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Make sure that patients take it every 8 hours with food in order to do not hurt the stom<\/span>ach.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our next question: What is the ideal antibiotic for you?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Dr CHUNG: \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>No resistance, no side effect<\/span><\/b>\u201d he laughed.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr CHONG: \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cBroad application, no allergy, great e<\/span>ff<\/span>ect, and <\/span>minimum price<\/span><\/b>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr APRIM :<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThe ideal antibiotic is the one who kills and inhibits <\/span>the bacterial growth <\/span>without developing resistance<\/span><\/b> and which has <\/span>no side effects<\/span><\/b> towards the patient.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And, finally, Do you think antibiotics can be replaced by other treatments?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Dr CHUNG: \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cIn my viewpoint, I think there\u2019s <\/span>no way<\/span><\/b> to replace it, but maybe after many years, human can invent stable genetic treatment to inhibit bacteria\u2019s growth.\u201d he sighed.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr CHONG: \u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s <\/span>difficult<\/span><\/b> to be replaced. If we don\u2019t use antibiotics, patients can only recover with their own immune system<\/span>, and it\u2019s hard.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
