Sue is a student in the 5th year of the Dentistry degree at Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera<\/a>.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Following her return from ERASMUS <\/a>in \u00a0Plzen<\/a>, I had the opportunity to chat to her and ask her a few questions about her experience. \u00a0This is what she had to say…<\/p>\n

1. What\u2019s your name, how old are you and what are you studying?<\/h3>\n

Shu-Wen Chen,\u00a0<\/strong>28 years old. Dentistry.<\/p>\n

2. Where did you go during your exchange and why did you choose that university and city\/country?<\/h3>\n

The Faculty of Medicine<\/strong>, Charles University in Plsen<\/strong><\/a>, Czech Republic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3. What was the reason you wanted to go for ERASMUS in Plzen?<\/h3>\n

To see and learn more in different system<\/strong> and culture<\/strong> plus to enjoy life<\/strong> (I bet students here will understand what I am talking about)!<\/p>\n

4. What do you think you have learned during your ERASMUS in Plzen, that you probably would not have learned had you not gone (academically or personally)?<\/h3>\n

During my visit to Charles University<\/a>, we learned and interned in a big hospital<\/strong>. In CEU<\/a>, the type of patient we meet depends on our fate. However, in Charles University, subjects\/patients are divided according to different departments<\/strong>, so dentistry students are able to meet different types of case<\/strong>. However, students do not have individual dental box, which is annoying.<\/p>\n

Oral surgery\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

First of all, classes took place in\u00a0operation rooms, so that big surgeries can be seen\/participated, such as OSCC<\/strong>, submandibular gland removal, Le Fort fracture fixation<\/strong>, mesioden extraction, rare diseases, operations under general anesthesia<\/strong> for handicapped patients, microscopic surgery\u00a0among others.<\/p>\n

Pediatrics<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Secondly, I think students are less independent<\/strong>, but various cases can be seen there (i.e. ranula, glossalankylosis). In the hospital, patients that bachelor students can handle are not screened out, so there are lots of uncooperative children in the clinic, and students can have a difficult time dealing with them. Hence skills cannot be improved in pediatrics there but knowledge can be increased<\/strong>. Therefore, all our experiences are double-edge swords.<\/p>\n

Dental Therapeutics and Pathology<\/strong><\/h4>\n

I managed to adapt<\/strong> to different environmental conditions and different materials<\/strong> and methods<\/strong>. \u00a0It is interesting to learn how to be a dentist under such conditions.<\/p>\n

Orthodontics<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Students in Plzen <\/a>must attend practical sessions<\/strong> whereas in CEU we don\u2019t have to. As a result, I managed to see a greater range of cases. \u00a0In CEU <\/a>we practice more in preclinic and seminars<\/strong> (I find this is very useful<\/strong> too). Thus, it\u2019s very important to acquire good knowledge in CEU<\/strong> in order to know what is happening when seeing real cases.<\/p>\n

Prosthetics<\/strong><\/h4>\n

At Charles University<\/a>, we attended emergency clinics<\/strong> and so we did not have a lot of prosthetics experience. \u00a0We mainly did denture adjustments<\/strong>, some emergency treatments<\/strong>, or fillings. Fortunately, Erasmus students can arrange their own clinic schedule<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

5. Do you think your exchange can be useful for you in your future working life? In what way?<\/h3>\n

Absolutely, yes<\/strong>. I have learned and seen so much from my experience!<\/p>\n

6. With the experience you now have, is there anything you would have done differently?<\/h3>\n
Before<\/strong> I went there, I was interested in doing oral surgery.<\/strong> And now, I am very interested in being a maxillofacial surgeon (Haha, I don\u2019t know. They are so cool<\/strong>.<\/em>).<\/h5>\n

7. What would you want to say to students thinking about going?<\/h3>\n
