Mounting evidence suggests a causal relationship between specific bacterial infections and the development of certain malignancies.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent study published in <em>Infectious Agents and Cancer <\/em>researchers, from the University of Louisville (UofL), KY, and Henan University of Science and Technology in Luoyang, China tested tissue from 100 patients with ESCC and 30 patients who did not have the disease (the controls). They tested samples taken from three types of esophageal tissue: cancerous tissue, non-cancerous tissue adjacent to cancerous tissue and normal tissue from the controls. <strong>They found that <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Porphyromonas_gingivalis\" target=\"_blank\">P. gingivalis<\/a><\/em>\u00a0was present in 61% of cancerous tissue samples and only 12% of adjacent tissue samples. They found none in the normal tissue samples.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1386\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uchceu.es\/odontologia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/06\/Imagen1.jpg\" alt=\"Imagen1\" width=\"821\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uchceu.es\/odontologia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/06\/Imagen1.jpg 821w, https:\/\/blog.uchceu.es\/odontologia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/06\/Imagen1-315x210.jpg 315w, https:\/\/blog.uchceu.es\/odontologia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/06\/Imagen1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.uchceu.es\/odontologia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/06\/Imagen1-696x464.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 821px) 100vw, 821px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>This findings it could mean that eradication of a common oral bacterium could help reduce the significant number of people who develop ESCC.<\/strong> To detect\u00a0<em>P. gingivalis<\/em>\u00a0in the tissue samples, the researchers measured expression of lysine-gingipain, an enzyme unique to the bacterium. They also looked for DNA traces of the bacterial cell. They found levels of both the enzyme and the bacterial DNA were significantly higher in the cancerous tissue of ESCC patients than in surrounding tissue or tissue of normal controls.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2108\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uchceu.es\/odontologia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/03\/blog-bacteria-prevencion-caries-2.jpg\" alt=\"Bacterias que causan caries\" width=\"800\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uchceu.es\/odontologia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/03\/blog-bacteria-prevencion-caries-2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blog.uchceu.es\/odontologia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/03\/blog-bacteria-prevencion-caries-2-315x252.jpg 315w, https:\/\/blog.uchceu.es\/odontologia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/03\/blog-bacteria-prevencion-caries-2-768x614.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.uchceu.es\/odontologia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/03\/blog-bacteria-prevencion-caries-2-650x520.jpg 650w, https:\/\/blog.uchceu.es\/odontologia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2015\/03\/blog-bacteria-prevencion-caries-2-696x557.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>They demonstrate for the first time that\u00a0<em>P. gingivalis<\/em> infects the epithelium of the esophagus of ESCC patients, establish the association between the infection of\u00a0<em>P. gingivalis<\/em>\u00a0and the progression of ESCCe, and suggest<em>\u00a0P<\/em>. <em>gingivalis\u00a0<\/em>infection could be a biomarker for this disease.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This study suggests that:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Improving oral hygiene and treating periodontal diseases will reduce ESCC risk<\/li>\n<li>Screening for <em>P.
