El pasado jueves 9 de noviembre, tuvimos el placer y el honor de recibir, en nuestra Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud, a Pablo Siegrist Ridruejo<\/a> y a la Dra. Pilar Garc\u00eda Fern\u00e1ndez<\/a>, Director General y Directora M\u00e9dica en Espa\u00f1a, respectivamente, de la Fundaci\u00f3n J\u00e9r\u00f4me Lejeune<\/a>, el primer centro m\u00e9dico especializado \u00edntegramente en la discapacidad intelectual de origen gen\u00e9tico. La creaci\u00f3n de esta fundaci\u00f3n se inspira en la figura del prestigioso m\u00e9dico y cient\u00edfico franc\u00e9s J\u00e9r\u00f4me Lejeune, descubridor de la cromosomopat\u00eda (trisom\u00eda 21) que da origen a la enfermedad conocida como s\u00edndrome de Down, y quien se entreg\u00f3 acad\u00e9mica y personalmente a velar por el bienestar de estos pacientes y su inclusi\u00f3n en la sociedad. La fundaci\u00f3n acoge actualmente a m\u00e1s de 12.000 pacientes, y aunque originaria de Francia, cuenta con presencia internacional en Espa\u00f1a, Argentina y Estados Unidos. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gracias a la colaboraci\u00f3n de nuestra Decana, la Dra. Ver\u00f3nica Veses<\/a>, nuestros alumnos de 3\u00ba y de 4\u00ba de Medicine pudieron disfrutar de las sesiones impartidas por ambos ponentes de la Fundaci\u00f3n Lejeune, en las asignaturas de General Pathology (bajo la tutela de la Dra. Ana Checa<\/a>) y Medicina Interna (bajo la supervisi\u00f3n de la Dra. Bel\u00e9n Merck<\/a>). M\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la transmisi\u00f3n de conocimiento te\u00f3rico, sus sesiones pretendieron enfatizar el valor humano y social intr\u00ednseco a la profesi\u00f3n m\u00e9dica, e inspirar y fomentar en nuestros futuros m\u00e9dicos, no s\u00f3lo la adquisici\u00f3n de habilidades te\u00f3rico-cl\u00ednicas, sino el desarrollo del compromiso humano y de entrega que define a la vocaci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

La primera parte de la ponencia, liderada por la Dra. Pilar Garc\u00eda, se enfoc\u00f3 en los hitos m\u00e1s importantes de la vida del Dr Lejeune (Figura 2), desde los logros acad\u00e9micos que le valieron la consideraci\u00f3n de \u00abpadre de la gen\u00e9tica moderna\u00bb, a los obst\u00e1culos a los que se enfrent\u00f3 en el mundo cient\u00edfico en defensa de los derechos de sus pacientes. En la segunda parte de la ponencia, Pablo Siegrist resalt\u00f3 los principios sobre los que se fundamenta la labor de la Fundaci\u00f3n Lejeune, comprometida con proporcionar atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica especializada, colaborar en la financiaci\u00f3n de investigaci\u00f3n de calidad, y defender la dignidad de la persona. Al final de la ponencia, varios estudiantes se acercaron a los ponentes para plantear diversas cuestiones, incluyendo la posibilidad de realizar rotatorios de corta duraci\u00f3n en la fundaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
