Este elemento mineral, es fundamental en muchos procesos celulares y su principal funci\u00f3n est\u00e1 relacionada con la conducci\u00f3n nerviosa, la contracci\u00f3n de los m\u00fasculos y en mantener una frecuencia cardiaca constante. En nuestro cuerpo, el potasio se encuentra fundamentalmente dentro de las c\u00e9lulas; sin embargo, cuando se produce una acumulaci\u00f3n excesiva debido a la imposibilidad de los ri\u00f1ones enfermos para eliminarlo por la orina, se genera una situaci\u00f3n de riesgo que incluso puede llevar a severas complicaciones y la muerte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durante muchos a\u00f1os, las medidas terap\u00e9uticas y f\u00e1rmacos disponibles para controlar la elevaci\u00f3n de potasio en la sangre eran muy limitadas. En pacientes con enfermedad renal cr\u00f3nica, las restricciones nutricionales de este electrolito son cruciales para su control, as\u00ed mismo, f\u00e1rmacos como el poliestireno sulfonato de calcio (<strong>RESINCALCIO\u00ae<\/strong>), han sido medianamente eficaces en el control de la hiperpotasemia ya que su tolerancia oral es bastante limitada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recientemente, se han desarrollado nuevas mol\u00e9culas o f\u00e1rmacos que han revolucionado el tratamiento de esta complicaci\u00f3n tan frecuente en los pacientes con enfermedad renal. Ya disponibles en Espa\u00f1a, el Patiromer (<strong>VELTASSA\u00ae<\/strong>) y el ciclosilicato de sodio y zirconio (<strong>LOKELMA\u00ae<\/strong>), son opciones disponibles para el control efectivo de este ion y sus complicaciones relacionadas. Al igual que el poliestireno sulfonato de calcio, estos nuevos f\u00e1rmacos vienen en presentaci\u00f3n oral (sobres para diluir) pero con una tolerancia oral muy superior que permite a los pacientes una mejor adherencia al tratamiento. Finalmente, una de las principales limitaciones de estos agentes para el control de potasio radica en el alto coste de los mismos lo que aumenta considerablemente el gasto sanitario en patolog\u00edas cada vez m\u00e1s frecuentes como la enfermedad renal cr\u00f3nica.
