CEU-UCH researchers José María Carrillo, Mónica Rubio and Joaquín Sopena are participating in the next Global Conference of Regenerative Medicine in Turkey

From 17th to 20th June, they will present two papers in Istanbul about regenerative medicine. One is about using plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) in skin, and the other is about using stem cells from adipose tissue in osteoarthritis.

José María Carrillo, Mónica Rubio and Joaquín Sopena, lecturers at the CEU Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and members of the Institute of Biomedical Science at the university, will participate in the next European Chapter Meeting of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS-EU 2013). This international conference takes place in Istanbul (Turkey) from 17th until 20th June, and brings together experts in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering in academic and industrial fields from all over the world.

Carrillo, Rubio and Sopena, together with García Cugat Foundation, will lead a ground-breaking project researching the degenerative joint disease or osteoarthritis, using mesenchymal cells derived from adipose tissue and PRGF from dogs. The research being presented in Turkey is the result of applying these advances to the field of human medicine, to achieve reparation which is most similar to the patient´s own cartilage and to regenerate skin with lesions.

The first of these treatments is based on the ability of mesenchymal cells derived from adipose tissue to adapt to different cell types. Proteins known as growth factors help to optimise these results, facilitating the differentiation of these types of cells and thus improving therapy.

Invited by an Argentinian University

Doctors Carrillo and Rubio, members of the Research Group for Experimental and Applied Veterinary Surgery at CEU-UCH, were invited by Rosario University in Argentina to share their knowledge at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and to hold professional workshops on treatment with this kind of therapy, as well as anaesthesia techniques and emergency surgery. They will be staying at the Argentinian university until 17th June.
