Even though France is a neighbour country to Spain, there are still some cultural differences. I normally live in Paris and am not used to the Mediterranean way of life! So, here are 5 cultural habits that struck me when I arrived in Valencia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

France and Spain have at least one thing in common: they are always 1 hour ahead of the time in the UK!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

1. It\u2019s 12h30, and no one is eating<\/strong><\/h4>\n

I wanted to go into the restaurant. Really. I was starving. It was past noon, so it was time for me to have lunch. But there was no one inside.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In France, you usually eat at noon<\/strong>. In my school, our lunch breaks are even at 11h40! Then you eat a little something around 4 or 5 and have dinner at 7 or 8 pm.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In Spain however, you have lunch at 2 or 3<\/strong>, and dinner at 9 or 10 pm. <\/span>It took me some time to adjust but I got used to it. I just have a \u201csecond breakfast\u201d around 11h30.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. La siesta<\/strong><\/h4>\n

I wanted to buy a cover for my bed when I arrived in\u00a0<\/span>Burjassot<\/span>. So, I went out on the streets and started to look for one. The town was\u00a0<\/span>absolutely empty<\/span>. I arrived on the main street and started walking it down. Everything was closed<\/strong>. I stopped. Looked at my watch. Sighed. <\/span>I\u00a0<\/span>had<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>completely<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>forgotten<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>about<\/span> la siesta<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In France, the afternoon is the moment when you are active<\/strong>: you go shopping, you go out, you do everything you have to do and then, you relax\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>n the evening. Here, you relax in the afternoon (<\/span>my\u00a0<\/span>French\u00a0<\/span>conception of\u00a0<\/span>afternoons\u00a0<\/span>is that it lasts\u00a0<\/span>roughly from 2 to 5pm), and you go out in the evening<\/strong>!<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0differences<\/em>\u00a0between living in\u00a0Spain and France<\/em> are not shocking, but still big enough to be noticeable.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I learned in the following days that la siesta<\/em> is not a rule everywhere<\/strong>. If everything indeed closes in <\/span>Burjassot<\/span>, the shopping area in Valencia around Col\u00f3n and <\/span>X\u00e0tiva<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>however\u00a0<\/span>remains open.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. How to be a pedestrian in Spain<\/strong><\/h4>\n

How amazed was I when the cars stopped at the crossing lines to let me pass! That happens almost every time here.\u00a0<\/span>I can\u00a0more or less cross<\/strong>\u00a0without looking<\/strong>. Which I obviously won\u2019t do because it’s hard to break a habit.<\/span><\/p>\n

The time you must wait for the green light<\/strong> is however longer than in France.\u00a0<\/span>I thought it was only an impression, but a fellow Frenchie told me that he realized it as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oh, and now, let’s talk about the metro escalators<\/strong>! In Paris, if you\u2019re not climbing them, you stand on your right to let the others climb it (and if you stand in the way, <\/span>expect to be asked to move)<\/span>. Here, a few people climb them, and most people don\u2019t care about where they stand.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Everything comes alive at 7pm<\/strong><\/h4>\n

This is when the city is going to get crowded<\/strong>. Siesta has come to an end: let\u2019s go party and enjoy life. Let\u2019s drink and nibble some appetizers!<\/span>\u00a0Let\u2019s go shopping!<\/span><\/p>\n

Another thing that struck me is how people\u00a0<\/span>smell and look super good at 7. That\u2019s a weird observation to make but bear with me. Try to take the metro at 7 in Paris: it won\u2019t be very pleasing. You’ll see weary faces, mostly. But here, it seems that people take advantage of the Siesta to put on some perfume and relax. They are all dressed up and it is as if their day was just starting<\/strong>!<\/span><\/p>\n

5. The metro\u00a0is\u00a0so\u00a0nice!<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Speaking of the Valencian metro<\/strong><\/a>, it\u2019<\/span>s very modern<\/strong> compared to the lines I am used to take in Paris. It also seems to have more space<\/strong>, to be cleaner<\/strong> and to provide an overall friendlier<\/strong> atmosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n

What particularly struck me the first time I saw the metro map of Valencia<\/a><\/strong> was that several lines\u00a0<\/span>followed the same path for quite some stations<\/span>. I was also amazed at the simplicity<\/strong> of the map<\/span>: I\u00a0<\/span>had no trouble understanding which lines I\u00a0<\/span>had to\u00a0<\/span>take. On the opposite side, the\u00a0<\/span>Parisian map<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>is\u00a0<\/span>quite messy and\u00a0<\/span>harder to read<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have not experienced an overcrowded metro in Valencia yet, which is truly a delight. Even when there were strikes it was really bearable! If I had only one thing to criticize, it would be that there are not stati<\/strong><\/span>ons everywhere<\/strong> in Valencia and you\u00a0<\/span>have to<\/span> walk<\/strong> or take a bus<\/strong> to access some areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cultural differences are one of the main reasons why I love traveling. It’s always amazing to be confronted to something new and unexpected!
