If you know Malvarrosa beach, Bioparc, the typical <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paella Valenciana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the City of Arts and Sciences, you have reached Valencia from the outside; but every city has its beauty from things that only the locals know. Therefore, I definitely want to get a deeper knowledge about Valencia as well as the Valencian people and bring you some interesting facts you may have not heard before.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The symbols of Valencia<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An antique shopkeeper Pilar in Moncada told me about some symbols that represented Valencia. Both shields have a bat (<\/span><strong><i>Rat Penat<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The tales about it are diverse, but the most common one tells that during the reign of Jaume I, the Moors tried to assassinate the King making a foray into his camp at night. Apparently, they bothered a bat that flew by and entered the King&#8217;s tent waking him up and interrupting the mission. Hint: It is close to the Valencian city hall.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>A popular sport\u2026<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking of sports, it is just not football, basketball, or Formula 1 competition. I want to introduce you to <strong><i>la pilota Valenciana<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or triquet<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0a traditional game which an old man suggests me to try out when I have a conversation with him about how to get through a boring Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the sport was played only by men; and imagine playing tennis without the racket, with a smaller ball, and the street as your field. There are from one to three men on each team. The system of counting point is similar to tennis: 15, 30, VAL, JOC. The ball <strong>(<\/strong><\/span><strong><i>la baqueta<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>)<\/strong> is made of animal skin, and as it is handmade the price is really high. In addition, when thrown the ball has a\u00a0great velocity so the \u201c<\/span><strong><i>piloters<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d have to put protective materials on their hands an hour before the game starts. Nowadays you can try this game at the historic <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fedpival.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triquet of Pelayo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Another place very close to our university is The City of Pilota in Moncada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"La espectacularidad de la Pelota Valenciana\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dhwBggw1bEM?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/blog.uchceu.es\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>What makes a Valencian?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">People that are originally from Valencia will show some common aspects:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you see them in a church, they are probably in a wedding, a baptism, or a communion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you give them a cup of soya milk and another of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">horchata<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they will recognise which is which. Some will tell you whether it is from a bottle or from an\u00a0<\/span><i>horchater\u00eda<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Moreover, in the case that they ask for <\/span><strong><i>fartons\u00a0<\/i>or <i>rosquilletas<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then you cannot insist anymore.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They never put onion and <em>chorizo<\/em> (Spanish sausage) in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paella<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and one thing you should know is that the word <\/span><strong><i>paellera <\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refers to the woman that cooks <em>paella<\/em>, but <\/span><strong><i>paellero <\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the place where they set the fire to cook <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paella<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not the male cook<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a person has family members with the name Vicente, Jos\u00e9, or Amparo, they are typically from Valencia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What do young people know about their city?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I went to the library and met some youngsters aged 14 to 16 and asked them to write down the very first famous person that came to their mind, no matter what field the person was in. The result, in my opinion, is quite interesting. The first thing I thought when I heard them saying the names of these people was that they sounded like the names of metro stations, buildings, and streets in Valencia <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is why it is worth taking a look at how these people are well known among the population. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The architect<\/strong> that designed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cac.es\/en\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">City of Arts and Sciences<\/a>: Santiago Calatrava.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The singer<\/strong>: Nino Bravo. Many Valencians from different generations know him. Try listening to the songs \u201cMi Tierra\u201d and \u201cLibre\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The writer<\/strong>: \u00c0ngel Guimer\u00e0, and Joanot Martorell whose book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tirant lo Blanch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is very famous and tells the story of a knight in searching for glory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The poets<\/strong>: Vicent Andr\u00e9s Estell\u00e9s, Ausi\u00e0s March. Both have a collection of poems. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The painter<\/strong>: Joaqu\u00edn Sorolla. He is able to transmit fully the beauty of the sun in his drawings. You can find his works around the streets and museums of Valencia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Try to hear the two songs of Nino Bravo to understand why the people like him.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nino Bravo - Mi tierra\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BVen549kqe8?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/blog.uchceu.es\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nino Bravo: LIBRE\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7812dngARbk?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/blog.uchceu.es\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The role of the festivals are crucial for the Valencians.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They say that every excuse is a good reason to celebrate. I know that the Spanish are very religious (at least most national holidays are due to that fact) so it is useful knowing that each village in Valencia has their own patroness, for example,\u00a0<\/span><strong><i>La Virgen de los Desamparados<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geperudeta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). This also explains the origin of many common names and surnames. As an example, I have here the name Amparo, because the meaning of the verb <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amparar <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Spanish is to protect, to defend. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spain.info\/en\/que-quieres\/agenda\/fiestas\/valencia\/fallas_de_san_jose.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Las Fallas<\/a> is the most popular festival, but the Valencians also tell me about other festivals with unique traditions, such as:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the 15th of August, <\/span><strong><i>Les alf\u00e0begues<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in B\u00e9tera. The act of \u2018offering of basil\u2019 to the patroness is special because the plant is grown until it is 2 meters tall.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Algemes\u00ed has <\/span><strong><i>La muixeranga<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which consists of a dance, an elevation of a human tower and the formation of plastic figures. The dancing can vary: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Els Bastonets<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the war dance by 8 men, while <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Carxofa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is for 12 young ladies; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Els Arquets<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a dance with small arcs and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Llauradores <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a modern dance with woodwind or brasswind instruments.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but not least, I wanted to know where would a Valencian go to eat <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paella <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if it is not in the city centre. Even though El Palmar, La Albufera, and the restaurant &#8220;La M\u00e1s Bonita&#8221; in Patacona are the most frequent answers, all of them said that the best <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paella <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the one they eat at home on Sunday when the whole family has gathered together. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key to understanding a culture is to not hesitate about interacting and socialising with local people.
