\"\"<\/a>If you\u2019re joining the University soon, then over the last few months you\u2019ve probably heard words bandied about like lectures and credits and that someone called Dean will welcome you to the University. Maybe this is all a bit puzzling and you\u2019re wondering what it all means \u2013 will four or five years be enough to learn about all this?<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s clear up what some of these puzzling terms actually mean.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Blackboard<\/strong><\/h3>\n
This is the online platform we use for our Virtual Campus. This is where you can find all the materials that your lecturers have uploaded for lectures, online tutorials, and more.\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>ECTS? What\u2019s that?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

ECTS stands for European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System<\/em>. An ECTS credit represents a particular number of hours that you\u2019ll spend on a given course (either in class, self-study or attending examinations).<\/p>\n

ECTS credits emerged as part of what\u2019s known as the Bologna Process: the aim of this was to facilitate the comparability of higher education qualifications across Europe.<\/p>\n

So how many hours does a credit represent?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

One ECTS credit is equivalent to between twenty-five and thirty hours\u2019 work. So, a year\u2019s study on a degree is worth around 60 ECTS credits. A Grado<\/em> \u2013 a Bachelor\u2019s Degree \u2013 usually consists of 240 ECTS credits in total, although some engineering degrees, for example, may have 300 ECTS credits. A three-month term is usually equivalent to 20 ECTS credits and a semester, 30 credits.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

What\u2019s a lecture?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Lectures \u2013 in Spanish, clases magistrales<\/em> \u2013 are the main way in which a lecturer, or a university professor, conveys knowledge to students. It\u2019s more or less the same as a typical class that you\u2019ll have experienced until now.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

What\u2019s a TFG?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The End-of-Degree Project, often referred to using its Spanish abbreviation, TFG, consists of a dissertation that you\u2019ll have submit and then give a public presentation on, at the end of the final year. The idea behind this is for to show to your lecturers that you\u2019ve assimilated the knowledge and skills you\u2019ve been taught over the course of your degree. You\u2019ll work on this project on your own and focus on an issue related to your degree in some way. You\u2019ll also be assigned a supervisor who\u2019ll guide you through the process.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>What\u2019s \u201cAula Magna\u201d?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This is a large lecture hall and it is normally used for official events. For example, in 2017, the University organized an international conference on rare diseases, the IV Congreso Internacional Educativo sobre Enfermedades Raras<\/em>, and this was inaugurated Spain\u2019s Queen Leticia in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Health Sciences building.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Who\u2019s Dean?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The<\/em> Dean is the person who is in charge of your Faculty and who ensures that everything is working correctly. In cases like ESET, which is a school rather than a faculty, the person in charge is called the Director, rather than the Dean. So, the Dean or the Director will be the one to welcome you to the University \u2013 your home for the next few years.\"\"<\/a>So, who\u2019s the Rector?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Rector is the person who\u2019s in charge of the whole university and who ensures that everything is working correctly.\"\"<\/a>Faculty, school and university: is it all the same thing?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A faculty <\/strong>is a part of a university, focusing on a particular area of knowledge. There\u2019s little difference between a faculty and a school in a higher education context, although the designation of \u2018school\u2019 is more commonly used for engineering and certain areas of scientific endeavour.<\/p>\n

The designation of \u2018university<\/strong>\u2019 refers to the whole organization and it may consist of different faculties and schools.<\/p>\n

For example, Journalism students study in the Faculty of the Humanities and Communication Sciences at the CEU Cardenal Herrera University.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

What does \u2018campus\u2019 really mean?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A campus is a group of buildings and infrastructures that a University has in a particular location. So, CEU UCH has a campus in Alfara del Patriarca <\/strong>(just outside the city of Valencia), another in Elche <\/strong>and another in Castell\u00f3n<\/strong>.
