The number of references and articles focusing on Portuguese architecture is on the up, as is the recognition its three great architectural figures: Fernando T\u00e1vora, \u00c1lvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura. Portuguese architects have quite literally created their own school and have redesigned the shape of <strong>Porto\u2019s urban environment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Architecture in Porto and Northern Portugal\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/65814488?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>With two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pritzkerprize.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Pritzker prize-winners<\/strong><\/a>, contemporary Portuguese architecture is experiencing a golden age. That\u2019s why we\u2019d like to give you a brief introduction to five architects and their studios that we think you should know about and so to set the stage for ConnectA, our international architecture workshop.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, a list of famous <strong>Portuguese architects<\/strong> can only start in one place.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Fernando T\u00e1vora<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For many Portuguese architects, <strong>T\u00e1vora is a real role-model<\/strong> and is responsible for dragging Portugal into modernity with a bang. This is due both to his work in itself, which is unique and yet which also marries so well with its surroundings, and to the enormous influence that he continues to exert on new generations of architects. Founder of the famous <strong>Porto School<\/strong>, T\u00e1vora taught some of the architects who would later leave such a modern stamp on the city, including Portugal\u2019s two Pritzker Prize-winning architects: Siza and Souto de Moura.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u00c1lvaro Siza<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>With more than 40 works under his belt just in the Porto area, the mark that \u00c1lvaro Siza Vieira has made on this area of northern Portugal is clear for all to see. However, some of his best known work which earned him the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pritzkerprize.com\/laureates\/1992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1992<\/strong><\/a> is found away from Porto. He was chosen to design Portugal\u2019s pavilion at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/583307\/ad-classics-expo-98-portuguese-national-pavilion-alvaro-siza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Expo 1998<\/strong><\/a> in Lisbon. This luminous single-purpose building of sinuous shapes displays the influence of Alvar Aalto, an inspirational figure for Siza.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cTRADITION IS A CHALLENGE FOR INNOVATION.\u201d \u00c1LVARO SIZA<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Buildings which are traditional and modern at the same time, using simple and yet almost sculptural shapes, but always in harmony with the surroundings \u2013 maybe this is the best way of defining Siza\u2019s achievement, in both completely new buildings and those which were already standing.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Eduardo Souto de Moura<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Another of the great names of Portuguese architecture, Souto de Moura not only shared a studio and worked alongside Siza in his youth, but he has also won a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pritzkerprize.com\/laureates\/2011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Pritzker Prize for Architecture<\/strong><\/a> in his own right. Versatility is one of his key traits \u2013 his work can be found in Italy, German and Spain \u2013 but the main body of his work is in Portugal. Built on terraces, the centre is made up of social, accommodation and training modules for elite sportspeople and which take the form of sinuous white units of various sizes. The building won the ECOLA prize in 2015.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>FALA Atelier<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A Portuguese studio which is capturing a lot of attention in recent years, and whose work adorns the pages of many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/office\/fala\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>specialist publications<\/strong><\/a>, is FALA Atelier. Founded in just 2013, its architectural work has already been repeatedly described as \u201cnaive, hedonistic, intuitive and rhetorical\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no doubt that the architecture is Porto is in vogue and that Portuguese architects are increasingly in demand across the world. That\u2019s why ESET has chosen to dedicate this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.uchceu.es\/arquitectura\/en\/international-workshop-connecta-countdown-copenhagen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Connect.A workshop<\/strong><\/a> to our neighbours to the west. In this way, our students can become better acquainted with the extraordinary architecture of Porto, but it will also mean that we can bring Portuguese architects and studios like<strong> FALA Atelier <\/strong>to ESET. We can then explore this intriguing post-modern vision of tomorrow\u2019s architecture with the best possible guides.<\/p>\n<p>Our third <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchceu.com\/en\/studies\/degree\/fundamentals-architecture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>ArchiTripture<\/strong> <\/a>destination, after Berlin and Copenhagen, is Porto. ArchiTripture is an innovative approach to the study of architecture which brings the concept of the Grand Tour into the 21st century. It\u2019s a journey of discovery for the architects who will design our future.
